Default Orvis Shooting Star spey rod

You'd be happy with either one. I'd stay around 13' or above.

Yeah, seems like most 7's are 13' and most 8's are 13'6''.

With a 13' rod, you will be able to use both hands to do an overhand cast as well. Those are fun and they bomb out there... Of course, this is if you have the room to do one.

A friend of mine uses a 7130 shooting star and loves it. I have 2 z-axis spey rods and love them, one is an 8110 and the other a 7136. In regards to your question, I've thrown the shooting star 7130 w/ the airflo scandi-compact, rage compact, and skagit compact and short. The rio steelhead scandi, and scandi-short versi-tip. All of these lines performed exceptionally well on the shooting star. For the money the shooting star is a great purchase, there aren't many bad spey rods, just people who can't line them properly. The shooting star has a small grain window, but once its dialed in, its a beast and you'll prob love it.

Great info thanks. Do you have a suggestion on a good grain weight for the shooting star 7wt?

I would stay around the 420 grain to 450 grain for scandi and 450 to 480 grain for skagit. Sorry if this is a little late.

I decided to start off simple and went with Spey Fly Line / Easy Cast Floating Spey Line -- Orvis in the 8 weight. Helped that it was on sale too. I'm going for largemouth with it so I don't think I need anything too fancy.

Do you have enough room behind you to cast a 50-71' head?
