    Default Finally Went Out Casting;

I didn't catch anything but it really didn't matter. The ice has went off one of my favorite rivers over the past few days and it was safe to take the boat out today. only one tree floating down and no other obstacles to dodge besides the normal submerged boulders.

The water came up and got dirty real quick the past 2 days but I didn't care and neither did Boss. We took a 30 mile ride and stopped for a couple hours of casting.

Here's Boss modeling the new 'I don't want my best friend to drown' Life Vest I got him this spring.

I rigged up 2 rods that needed to be tested out and there is a new favorite. The Hardy Marksman II - T is nice but it's so light. it works well and to be fair I'm going to use it for as much trout, grayling and light salmon fishing as I can on medium size waters.

I had it fitted with a Scientific Anglers Short Head #9 Spey line. The Short Head lines have a 55' belly and although the rod is rated a #8 the nine weight line seemed good for it. You can very comfortably make 60 - 70 foot casts with this rod and the light weight makes it barely noticeable in your hands.

The other rod was that new (old stock) 15' Winston Derek Brown 7/8 rod I got last fall!
There is no fair comparison between these tow rods, none. The Winston is rigged with a Delta Long 9/10 with a 66' belly and the rod loads up and casts the whole head if you desire that long of a cast.

I had one of Cut Throat Leader's 9' Spey leaders on with a 4' tippet. The leaders turn over perfectly and when trying to reach out a little 90 foot casts are made with no effort.

By 'no effort' I mean; no hurry, no noise (the swish) no splash & spray, just plain and simply the best one of these rods I've ever cast. It'll be tough using anything else but the 15' length will have it pigeon holed just a bit. It is a beauty if you don't mind the weight of these older rods.

Love the Winston rod, love the Delta long by Air-Flo, just beautiful to cast. Too bad I didn't catch a fish but they are as tired of winter as I am so there's no hard feelings.

I'm glad it has cleared enough for you to get out, even without fish. Looks like a beautiful river.

That's where all the grayling and trout get caught in the fall if there is no flood............

Usually it's still clear this time of year but the runoff came fast with 3 days in a row of sun and 64* weather. It's strange here in many ways, there was so much snow up there and then it's just gone! Gone like poof, gone, strange, but that's what has things all murky.

    Thanks Fellas,

We are leaving for the cabin on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning depending on the ice conditions at Hewitt Lake. The rivers are clear and so is Hewitt Creek but the lake is stubbornly holding on to its ice. By the look of things it will be cleared in another day, we have some good weather right now for ice melting.

As usual it won't be all play out there but there will be some fishing done on this trip too. I'm very curious to see the hill in front of the cabin where I cut all those trees over the winter. If you don't know what I'm talking about here, there is a blog on my profile page that has the winter postings which detail all the work at this cabin on the lake.

I'll take the Nikon camera and get some photos while we are away. The little pocket camera is handy but the pictures don't compare to what I can do with the SLR.

    Hey John,

The Winston 7/8 will change me from a hacker to a caster. I could tell after only an hour with it. It's something else, exactly what I hoped for. The flex, the power, it's heavy but there was no comparison between the new Hardy rod and the Winston. Hardy seems like it would be suited to short shooting heads rather than long belly lines.

I'm going to try catching a fish while we are away

    Hey Ard!

Great to see that you're able to get out and get some casting in. It shouldn't be long now (hopefully) before you're back in the *swing* of things

Boss is stylin' in his new vest! Looking forward to some updates and sending luck your way. Hopefully it gets you on a fish or two
