Maybe the only ethical thing to do is only fish if you actually keep and eat them. I would be willing to bet there would be far less fishermen in the water.

Along some smaller remote Alaska streams draining into Bristol Bay there is a cultural clash when locals see C&R being practiced. Apparently playing with a food source is not viewed positively. Sport fishers are cautioned regards releasing fish within sight of locals.

Whatever one chooses to do within the framework of regulations is a personal decision. High catch rates, and the inevitable, if slight, unintended death of some released fish puts everyone in the blood sport category eventually.
