A friend just game me a fishing rod set. Wooden box 5 piece casting/fly rod. Fly rod is 8 ft with just an O at base for marking also the weight of 3oz. Does anybody have any idea of what wt line this would take? Looks like it came with a little braided line.appreciate any info on this.

Without pics, hard to say for sure, BUT most rods matching your verbal description were mass produced in Japan and sold to GIs returning to the states, or exported to the USA post-war. They are generally lower quality and lower value ($50 or so) compared to the best split bamboo rods. However, that doesn't mean that your particular rod isn't perfectly serviceable.

My first fly rod when I was a youngster was a 9' Japanese cane.
Cost 3 dollars and change new in 1964 and still have most of the pieces. ;)
We had a couple of others in the house too.. One was an 8footer but a fly rod, not a spin/fly.
Some years ago I rebuilt that rod and use it occasionally.... with a 6wt line.
It's a little heavy but very pleasurable to cast

I have one of those, make sure you check the furrel fit, they can loosen up.

I have had good experiences casting a wf6, all the original markings are intact and there is no line weight indicated.

A little heavy as mentioned, but a nice rod overall
