Default Anyone Like Morels?

It's that time of year again, and my son really has this wired. He has his spots and says they should pop up for a few more days. Picked a couple hundred already, so I'll be drying them for the next couple days. Eat a few, dehydrate and vac-pac the rest. We're usually good for a year without having to worry. I really like cooking with these things.

Good on you! I typically make it out a half-dozen times or so during morel season, and about once every three years I'll make a haul like that. Mostly it's ten or fewer.

Chanterelles, on the other hand...seems like all the woods all around here are lousy with 'em.

It's snowing here....haven't got to go and find any. I always do one meal a year on them, usually whites and grays. I enjoy the blacks more but never find as many in my spots.

Wink Re: Anyone Like Morels?

Ah yes, 'dry camping' in my RV and the 'Hunter/Gathers' surround me! Only 'Loo' in miles so I'd let the Ladies inside to 'do their business.' Pay off was one heck of a dinner with a couple and their Sig-Others.

Guys could 'Go ship in the Woods.' Some singles, lots of rain, "Can I sleep in here tonight?" Lady (and some times kids) inside ... male could 'Man up' and sleep in the car/tent.

Dated one and got to serious thinking about a long term commitment. More to that, but I'll leave it at that. Well, Dog-Dog's said 'Don't think so;' never question your dog's, they know better than you do ...?

Breakfast, fries and Mor's .. food group of the GODS!

Congrats on your score!

Its been a weird spring here in central NC. Daytime temps say there should be morels up, but overnight lows are still too low. I've checked my close-by earlier spot 3 times so far and they're not there yet. Looking at the weather forecast, it's going to be at least another week.

I have always loved morels. Unfortunately, I am the worst mushroom hunter in the world. I have always enjoyed being in the woods, so while mushroom hunting, I would hear a bird or a squirrel up in the trees and try to find it. Before I know it, I have gone 25-30 yards looking up. Not a lot of mushrooms up there.

I always miss the oysters by searching the ground instead of the trees

I miss em like crazy. Used to get full pillow cases of them back in Iowa out by the Amana colonies. If you're offering to ship em I'd take some ;-)

From our yard last year. This year what I'm excited about trying for the first time are "Fiddleheads" like RipTide mentioned in a previous Morel thread. We have maybe one or two "gazillion" ferns spring up in our gardens. What I'm not sure of is if there is a specific type I should pick?

I love those tasty morsels dipped in milk, dredged thru the cornmeal and fried.
