new guy from miami , florida (pic heavy)
let me say first that this forum has helped me alot in understanding fly fishing. i never picked up a fly rod in my life but have seen fly fisherman at my local lake and ive always wanted to give it a whirl. so i ordered my first fly outfit, a redington pursuit 9' 6wt (thanks tax return!!).

ive fishing for about 5 years with both spinning and baitcasting rigs in freshwater for largemouth , peacock and other non-native panfish. im strictly shorebound due to the fact i cant fit a kayak in my apartment but i do plan on picking up a float tube in the future.

heres some pics of some of my catches...

my current favorite fishing outfit...i love light tackle.
i had to throw this one in there lol...

im hoping to catch some of these on a fly in the near future

Nice stuff.

I'd give the salty stuff a try too.

im actually minutes away from the local marina where alot of guys fish off the jetty and an hour or so (depending on traffic of course) from the florida keys. while ive done a little bit of salt water fishing , i prefer fresh. mainly because any available spot to shore fish saltwater is so crowded and over fished to the point where instead of getting snagged on rocks or other cover , you get snagged on peoples lines and leaders that have broken off. not to mention the crazy amount of trash that people leave around.
if i can convince myself to buy heavier gear , i would hit up the salt more often.

That was a great first post. Good fishermen catch fish, regardless of gear, so you'll be successful on the fly too. Your enjoyment of light gear will also help you to understand landing fish on the long wand, in my opinion. Good luck.

First off, welcome to the forum! This is a great source of information for someone just getting into the sport. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, someone here will more than likely have the answers you need. By the way those Peacock Bass look like a ton of fun.

thanks guys!
i have not caught many species of fish but these are in a league of their own. while they arnt the monsters you see people catch in the amazon , a 3# pea will put up a solid fight on light tackle. you instantly know you have one on the end of your line as soon as you stick em.

welcome to the forum. I live up in coral springs. Try fishing the saltwater canals. they hold baracuda and snapper

Welcome to the forum! I was in Miami last week (Bird Road/FIU area) for a class at the National Hurricane Center. One evening, after class, took a ride down to the Miami Fly Shop, off of US 1, near South Miami. They have a relatively small storefront in a strip-mall, but don't let that scare you away.

A very friendly couple of guys there, seemed very knowledgable and willing to share ideas, etc. They seemed pretty well stocked with fly tying materials, had a large assortment of flys (though salt water streamers all look very similar, to me) and they even offered to help me set-up an outing with guide, when I ever get back down that way.

If you are from that area, I'd encourage you to stop in, an see what they can do for you!

Thanks Rick. I found their shop when I was searching around the net for local shops and they are about 20 mins north of me. I plan on swinging by there when I get some time. Its good to know a friendly staff works there. Did you get a chance to do any fishing while you were down here? Im not too familiar with the FIU area but I know there are some canals that run through the Ludlam Rd area that look fishy.
