I was born and raised in SW Michigan in a pretty typical Midwestern family. The first fishing experience I can remember was at my uncle's cottage on a lake in N MI, zebco rod and little perch. My dad restored an old Thompson rowboat when I was in H.S. and I began to spin fish for bluegills and bass on the local lakes. After setting out on my own I started fishing a small put and take trout stream outside the city I lived in. We watched guys fly fish for Great Lakes run steelhead. One morning, in my early 20s, I was at the sporting goods store with an almost still-drunk hangover I decided I should buy a fly rod. A $100 Eagle Claw set up sent me on my way. I taught myself how to fly fish. Then I taught myself how to tie flies. It wasn't until I moved to Montana a few years later that I even knew a good fly fisherman. I married a Montana woman who understands my need to fish.
