Flow

by jslo on 09-20-2014 at 02:34 AM
I had a couple hours free today, and chose to spend them on my home river. A few random thoughts:

*I fished an "old" hole of mine. This particular section a massive forest fire pretty much trashed a few years ago. I used to hammer it in there, but haven't caught or even tried in a couple years. Today I caught 6 or 7 nice fish! Browns and Bows. Just like the old days. Fun. Great to see this stretch coming back to life.

*The rivers flow is drifting into

Adjust

Today I changed out flies and rigs like a toll booth. As in I made alot of change! Allow me to elaborate.

When I got to the river, I looked at the level and the clarity- I saw the runs, pools, and the holes. I immediately thought "dryfly day" and tied on a #14 tan caddis. Ginked it up and off I went. About 30 casts in with nary a looker, I started feeling antsy. I was so sure and set on my plan of attack that I was hesitant to change out my setup. But a new resolution

Yesterday I took some time and ventured OFF the beaten trail. As in off the "I fish here all the time" trail. It took a little map work, some plotting of routes, and some Googling- but I was rewarded with a fairly precise and successful expedition.

What I mean by precise and successful is that I did not waste alot of time on the road plotting a route or getting lost, and I found water and caught fish. I did the work ahead of time and knew the type of road, what to look

Skunked

Yesterday I joined a few local fellows in a fly fishing endeavor. I had never met them in person before, but as probably is not all that uncommon- I met them in a fly fishing forum.

We decided to try out new water, and located some promising looking flows and ponds on a detailed map. It was quite an expedition getting to these remote higher altitude ponds. We moved fallen trees out of rutted dirt roads, we were roadblocked by national forest gates, we 4x4 crawled over large boulders

Drag Free

I have a guide friend who is an avid hatch matcher. He will carefully pump the stomach of the first trout he catches, and dutifully inspect the contents. He will then tie on whatever the trout he caught has been eating.

Figuring out what bugs are on the river via watching what's buzzing around me, or looking under rocks is my own preferred method! I'm not much for stomach pumping.

On the other hand, function over form says: An elk hair caddis with a dropped copper
