Rivers Change Day by Day

by karstopo on 11-15-2017 at 01:07 PM
Where I live there are a wide variety of saltwater fish haunts. Within 30 minutes of my house, I could be slinging flies in a marsh, bay, pass, harbor, river, creek, you get the idea. Last weekend, it was a river I found myself in. See, the day before, my good buddy went out on this same stream and jumped a couple of 3-4 foot Tarpon, caught a 4 pound snook, all along with racking up several stud speckled trout in the 4-5pound range and a couple of beefy redfish. Where do I sign up for action like

The Battle Continues

by karstopo on 10-25-2017 at 08:19 PM
So I thought I knew what I was doing. Today looked like lay up, slam dunk, easy peasy fishing. It's October, prime time, and the water was low. The area a redfish could call home suddenly shrunk by tens of thousands of acres because the water got low thanks to a westerly wind. I stacked the deck by going to a reliable low water spot.

Things started out better than okay. Some nice guy with a good spirit was at the launch fishing and crabbing and enjoying the chamber of commerce weather.

The Grass Carp Journey

by karstopo on 10-23-2017 at 02:38 AM
It's hard to ignore a 10 pound fish that almost literally is on your back door. That's how it's been since I moved to this house on the lake in July. After fits and starts of fishing on the lake and getting fully moved in and comfortable in the house, I've settled into a routine of casting off one or both of the docks pretty much everyday at some point in the day. It could be at dawn when I let the dog out or I might spend part of my lunch putting on attempting to put a weighted streamer a foot

Recent Trend Continues

by karstopo on 10-21-2017 at 05:19 PM
This has been a weak October for finding fish in the salt water and then getting them to take a fly. A week ago I searched in vain for redfish and settled for some mostly small speckled trout, a couple of croaker, and a small flounder. One better speck thrashed some bait near a shoreline and I was able to put a shrimp pattern on target and get the fish. Sort of a consolation prize.

But in years past, October has meant schools of redfish raiding bait up shallow. It's meant fantastic,

Living on A Lake

by karstopo on 10-20-2017 at 04:49 AM
Living on a lake is not a bad thing. I've got to say I've really enjoyed fishing at the drop of a hat, whenever there's free time and the mood strikes me. Like yesterday afternoon. The lake looked fishy. An Anhinga was out there fishing begging me to join him. So was the Osprey overhead. Why should they have all the fun? All it takes is a charged car battery, flat bottom, a troll motor, a couple of fly rods and a few flies and I'm fishing in a matter of seconds.

The particular lake
