About sweetandsalt
My passion for fishing began when I was 6 years old upon my family moving to a house across the street from a creek. At 14, an angling relative gifted me a Sewell Dunton 8 rod for HDH, a Pfluger Medalist with Aircell line and a leader tying kit. I later supplemented this with a fly tying kit including a Thompson A vise from Herters. During a college summer break in the late 1960's, I loaded my little car with camping gear and cane rod and headed for Yellowstone Country which I had read tales about in the magazines since I was a kid. My education and subsequent life involvements remained in my native East but my heart was/is in the West. Since those college years three month long trips, I have missed only two July's camping along and fishing the rivers and streams of Idaho and Montana. Back in the early "fishing bum" days we would gather around campfires after the evening spinner falls and the friendships which evolved then have endured through the decades. Many of my fishing companions from back in the day have become outfitters, outdoor writers and tackle manufacturers but now our ranks are beginning to thin with each passing season. I still live in a tent camp during my annual month-long Western adventure and continue to explore and pursue mythical hidden spring creeks where the PMDs always emerge and the un-fished trout are huge.

Mayfly emergence seasons east and west do not last year round so over the years I included in my repertoire Atlantic salmon and steelhead fishing and saltwater fishing both up north for striped bass and migrating false albacore and, in warmer climes, for tropical flats species. During the 80's I developed a particular love for bonefish...which persists and continues to intensify. My wife fishes too and our home is over run by leaning cardboard boxes full of fly rods old and new and our living room perpetually resembles a spider's web of fly line and leader rigging activity. An inveterate experimenter, no new knot does not get tied and no new line does not get tried. Every year a couple of new sweet and salt water rods find their way into our inventory.

Many of my friends, even the ardent fly fishers among them, think I am over the top but that is what facilitates taking the time to enjoy participating in the North American Fly Fishing Forum. I strive to be objective and explanatory in my opinions which are founded on my personal experience and comparative analysis of tackle and technique. Though we are on the Internet, I fact-check data whenever there is reasonable doubt, often directly with sources in the fly tackle industry, none of whom I have a professional relationship with.
