Fishing Report: 5/8/12 to 5/15/12

Jc Sport fishing started of this past week with lots being caught and Fish buzz in the air, with the IFGA 2012 Offshore World Championship being held as we speak. The first day of tournament action was productive with 144 Striped Marlin being caught and released. There were 47 teams and a total of 209 anglers, The fisherman in the tournament come from all over the world and have been impressed with the number of Striped Marlin being caught in the rich waters of Cabo San Lucas. Unofficial leaders as of now are 2010 IGFA Offshore World Champions with 2200 points . Followed by San Carlos Cantina Cup and XV Torneio de Marlin Azul do Rio de Janeiro both with 1400 points. Tied for third place with 1200 points each are 7th Campeonato Int de Pesca Grossa de Portimao and 39th Annual Bluewater Tournament.
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memoriable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
BAIT: Caballito are in abundance this week with not to many Mackerel. The bait is at the standard 3$ a piece. . Some frozen Ballyhoo have been found on the bait boats. Try and find fresh frozen and not refrozen.
FISHING:
The water temperatures on the Sea of Cortez side were from 74 to 77 degrees. While on the pacific side were they were lower at 68 to 71 degrees. On the top side of the San Jaime Banks there is a band of cold water at 60 degrees. Day time temperatures in the 90,s and light winds have made conditions really favoriable for fishing. Swells have been pretty small.
Striped Marlin fishing has been wide open, with lots of marlin being hooked, caught and released. It seems to be in the same general area as last week, between the 1150 and the San Jose Canyon. The fishing is good on the 95 spot also. Lots of Marlin were caught dragging lures and some with live Caballitos. There were also reports of Blue Marlin being caught on the Sea of Cortez side in the warmer water. Looks like Blue Marlin fishing is fast approaching . Our own 29ft Bob Marlin reported today of catching 2 Striped Marlin, a Meko Shark, Blue Shark and Rooster fish, The Roosters were caught in the Chileno Bay area and there has been reports of Roosters being caught from the Arch to the Pump Station. Sierras fishing has remained steady with most being caught off the Arch north to in front of Sunset Beach. A few Yellowtail being caught close to shore, but it has been scarce as well as for Yellow Fin Tuna. The Dorado bite is way down with only a few small ones being reported caught. All the reports of Wahoo have been in the Gorda Banks and Punta Gorda area in warm water. Some being 25 to 40 pounds. Wow good eating.
BEWARE: Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
