Tarpon Fishing in the Yucatan

The "Silver King" is on the move. Size and numbers are increasing between San Felipe de Yucatan and Holbox and will continue to do so through the end of the summer. Tarpon range between 5# and 25# year around but this time of year, the big Tarpon (125#+) migrate the emerald waters at the north end of the Yucatan. There are 4 primary fishing locations...San Felipe, Rio Lagartos, El Cuyo and Holbox. The guide services in San Felipe and Holbox are superior to Rio Largartos and El Cuyo. San Felipe and El Cuyo are both clean, friendly and inexpensive Mexican fishing villages. Rio Lagartos lies 12 miles east of San Felipe and is the exact opposite (enough said) of San Felipe and El Cuyo. Holbox is an island accessable by panga ferry service from Chiquila and is approximately 2 hours north of Cancun while San Felipe is 2.5 hours northwest. Holbox is a delightful tropical experience. There are good roads from Cancun to all locations. If Tarpon fishing is what you are looking for, many guides offer or will arrange transportation from Cancun and back for you or you can always take the Mayab Bus from downtown Cancun to any of the locations I have mentioned. All four locations offer multiple day packages so do your internet homework because prices and services vary. Tight Lines to all. Tom www.pescamexicana.com
