Snook Fishing in Cozumel

Mother Nature is a strange lady and the theory that every action has an equal and opposite reaction has never been so true in the Yucatan. Cozumel is known for excellent flats fishing. Bonefish and Tarpon cruise the flats everyday, rain or shine while Snook and Permit are hiding in the mangroves. Since Hurrican Emily, Bonefish on the Cozumel flats are 20% to 30% larger than previous schools and the numbers of Snook, and I mean large Snook, are staggering. Schools of Tarpon and single Permit remain constant and are less spooky than they were a week ago. The best flies for Bonefish are Gotchas and Charlies in pearl, tan and pink. Pink Mini-puffs also work great as well as Epoxy Moes all in size 6 or 8. Be sure to use bead eyes on not lead eyes. Permit love small size 2 to 6 epoxy crab or Mangrove Criter patterns. Cockroaches and Tarpon Glo's work well for Tarpon with the darker colors and orange being the best. Do not worry about occasional rain clouds, the fishing is usually fantastic after an afternoon shower with many Bonefish caught within 20 meters of the boat you have been sitting in. The summer heat has been moderate and the showers infrequent. Hotels prices are at their seasonal low and restaurants have their off season menu's out so contact your favorite guide service, come on down and take advantage of the low prices and good weather.
