Default Lookin for a little insight.

Hello, this would be my first official post on the site!

Anyway, I am new to fly fishing and not very good :/ and I haven't had a whole lot of experience on the water either. So I suppose what I am in need of is a river or stream that isn't to far away from me. I live in Moneta Va and do most of my fishing in Buchanan and Roanoke.

    welcome Harris

If you do not mind a pay to play option you will find great fishing and help at Escotawba farms. not far from you.

    Hi harrisc,

Welcome to NAFFF. I hope you enjoy your time here and we can help you catch some fish.

I don't know your area but take a look at the Switch Fisher and check out there reports for Virgina. You should also check out this thread about finding places to fish. This thread has some good ideas.

harrisc: Welcome to the forum! Don't hesitate to ask questions, we will do our best to help out. One thing you might consider is to look and see if there are any fly fishing clubs in your area. Check with your local fly shop and you might check on-line to see if there is a local TU chapter near you. By joining a local club you will have access to local resources to help out first hand with your casting and other fly fishing questions.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful hints.
Now the only thing is to get some directions and go fishing

My advice would be a buy a wading staff and read up on wading safely.

Still, I have to always remind myself not to step ahead of my staff.

I've taken too falls. Luckily, I wasn't hurt.

Thank you randy. I will most definitely take that into consideration the next time I make it to my local fly shop.

harrisc-- welcome to the forum you've gotten great advice so far--

here are a couple links that might help--

the VA Dept of fish and game has some info on fishing by county and section on trout fishing water by county
    Fishing

And Larry gave you great advice about checking out a fly fishing group if there's one near you. Two good organizations are the Federation of Fly Fishers with affiliated clubs across the country, and Trout Unlimited, with a lot of local chapters Typically they are big on education--- with fly casting clinics, tying classes, group trips to local water and informative meetings. It's a great way to jump start your fly fishing career. Here are some links to search for one near you:

For FFF affiliated clubs Locate a Club

For TU chapters Council-Chapter Search | Trout Unlimited - Conserving coldwater fisheries

And don't overlook fishing for panfish-- pretty much in any water you find-- they can be a lot of fun--- and a real confidence builder as well as let you get some practice on the water. And you're sure to have a lot of Largemouth and Smallmouth fishing too down your way in addition to trout streams.

Thank you Mark and everyone else for all this wonderful information that you have given me. I do plan on fishing for just about everything I can. However, with how cold it has been I want to focus more on trout. Everything else I normally fish has pretty much stopped biting. (In other words I haven't had a whole lot of luck to go with what little skill I have haha) Unfortunately after looking through the sites for local fly fishing clubs hasn't been to successful. The closest one I could find was about an hour and a half away. So it will be sometime before I will be able to make out there.

    Thanks
    Harris
