Thread: Noobie north AL

  1. Default Noobie north AL

Complete novice to Fly Fishing, and I live in the North AL area just east of Huntsville. Done some spinning fishing, and some beach fishing but not much. Im developing a fascination for fly fishing as it seems more technical, more interesting and maybe I would not get bored watching a float all day. So, what would be a good starter rod, real, line, etc. and a ball park on $$$, maybe some lessons? Im a little scared to walk into an outfitter and end up with some great, expensive equipment for a lot of money with no idea what to do with it. Hoping the startup isnt too expensive as I would like to get the wife involved.

    Welcome to the forum Cockney.

There will be other members coming on this evening that can give better advice on quality price point gear, but you will need to give more detail first. What will you be primarily fishing for such as bass, perch, trout or etc. Fishing small brush choked creeks, ponds/lakes or rivers. Also use the search feature, there is a treasure trove of good articles hidden within. One last thing, it takes time to become accomplished, we are all at different stages and each of us has been where you are now so don't worry about asking questions. Most importantly take time to enjoy the beauty of where that fly rod will take you.

I was going fly fishing until my wife suggested it, now I can't tell who is outsmarting who!

Being "one with nature" requires a knowledge of what animals are living nearby and a weapon of sufficient magnitude to give you at minimum an equal chance of survival. No one has an invisible aura that animals can detect and sense your good intentions.

Great stream smallmouth bass fishing in your area , at one time there was a federation of flyfishing chapter in Huntsville ,Al. If so that would be a good starting point. Couple of guys at Big Daddy's in Bridgeport have interest in flyfishing. Might check with them. In Birmingham is Deep South Outfitters a flyfishing shop the owner is a warm water fly fisherman that fishes the streams in your area. Might give him a call. He has a guy that gives casting lesson and is a rod builder. The Flint is a great smallmouth stream that must be close to you. Guntersville lake should make for great bass fishing for fly fishing. Reason I know about area I travel thru N Bama a lot and wish I had more time to fish . Also a great shop in Nashville ,FlySouth with lots of warm water fishing experience. We can hook you up with help on this forum just hang around and see.
