Default Atlantic Salmon Return to River Seine @ Paris!

I'm also an active member of a European Salmon fishing forum and one of the fellows just linked this article up there. Perhaps our friend Jean Paul will get the chance to fish for salmon yet

A very hopeful development! Although somebody needs to tell the photo editor that that river is not the Seine, and those salmon are not Atlantics.

"The results suggest that when it comes to conservation, restoring an ecosystem is probably a better strategy than restocking depleted waters,..."

    Really? Who would have thought?

Sarcasm aside, it's nice to read an article like this rather than one bemoaning the loss of yet another resource.

Great to see news like this. So many environment plans are deemed expensive and likely to fail so why bother? It has to be somewhat easier to free up clean water funds when you can cite success stories around the globe.

Apparently, they have returned to the Seine starting around 2009, but I don't know if they repopulated tributaries upstream from Paris until now.

I followed the thread across the pond and it seems that the numbers have rose and fell over the past 7 years. They don't seem to have an accurate way to count and that's understandable when you consider a couple things. It seems there have been no appreciable numbers for 100 years, the Seine is a really big river, just the size of the river would make counting difficult. The fact that they showed up unexpected tells me that there were no means to track them at the ready.

If you want to see how fish counts are conducted here you can read and look here; Fish Counts

The link should take you straight to a brief article about assessing run strength of salmon in Alaskan rivers.
