    Default The Compleat Angler

This Obscure Fishing Book is One of the Most Reprinted English Books Ever | Smithsonian

It also captured something universal about the experience of being in nature. “Men are taken to be grave,” Walton writes, “because Nature hath made them of a sowre complexion.” They are “money-getting-men,” he writes, “men that spend all their time first in getting, and next in anxious care to keep it.” But “we Anglers pity them perfectly, and stand in no need to borrow their thoughts to think ourselves so happy.”
The simpler the outfit, the more skill it takes to manage it, and the more pleasure one gets in his achievements.” --- Horace Kephart

I have this book, Rip. A nice hardcover copy I bought from Jerry (Hairwing530). I pick out sections and read them, occasionally. It isn't an easy read; pretty dry by today's standards, but nice to own.

Thanks for mentioning this book. Olde English does make it a tough read but I will never part with my copy. A true classic.

I tried to read it because I am supposed to. It was too painful to enjoy. I was good for a couple chapters.

The influence of this book and Izaak Walton on fishing literature through the years was the subject of my senior English thesis in 1963.

The numbers of references that I found from everybody from A.J. McLane to Dr. James Henshall to Ted Trueblood and on and on were amazing. I didn’t enjoy Walton anywhere near as much as the people who came after. Until I actually read it, I didn’t realize how bait-oriented he was.

Funny but I have reread many of the others in the years since then, but have never had any particular desire to reread Walton.

Did I not just say I haven't finished reading it yet? You just had to ruin the ending for me.

Sorry...should have mentioned a spoiler alert since it is recent.
Maybe Brad will star in a new English version. He can stand on a rock and make a long cast to a coarse fish.

A Folger coffee can, can do a cameo.
    The complete dangler. ...
When I first read it as a fly fisher 40 yrs ago....I felt it was a clear case of bait and switch.

The bar isn't set by the fish we catch, but by the one's we don't.

That's one I'd heard of ever since I was a kid but never had an urge to read, I'd say it's on a short list with Dame Juliana Berners 'Treatise on Fishing' for winter reads.... I do however find those outfits shown in the artwork attractive

That post made my morning Jim. Apology accepted.

Look at the cover again. That's not a river, it's a Driftless stocker bow creek based on the crowd size. Walton has already caught his limit and he's still fishing. I wondered how all this poaching got started.
