Thread: A quick hello

  1. Default A quick hello

Just wanted to say hello, just joined today. I have been fishing with spinning and baitcasting rigs for a really long time. Received some gift cards to one of the big box sportsman's stores so I decided to get some basic fly fishing gear and try to learn how to fly fish. Actually stumbled upon the site doing searches for tippet and leaders information. Anyway, hello to all and I am sure I will be doing more reading than posting to start! Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. You will find some really nice folks on this forum that are more than willing to share their knowledge of fly fishing, so don't be shy, just ask away. Don't forget to use the search function, it works very well and the FAQ will also help. We look forward to your posts and good luck with your fishing.

Hey Matt, welcome to the forum. Feel free to ask questions as they come up, and I'm sure they will. Between the lingo, different types of gear and all it can be really confusing, so just shout if you have any questions--- we've all been there. No need to reinvent the wheel.

In the meantime, here are some resources that might be helpful:
The Federation of Fly Fishers and Trout Unlimited have affiliated clubs/chapters all over the place, and they offer casting clinics, tying classes, informative meetings, group trips to local water etc. Many have members that do both FW and SW fly fishing too. It’s a great way to jump start the learning curve and meet some new fishing buddies. The FFF also maintains a list of certified casting instructors if you want some lessons or want a tune-up for your stroke before the season starts. You can do a search here to see if there is a group near you:
    Locate a Club
    and here for TU:
Council/Chapter Search | Trout Unlimited - Conserving coldwater fisheries

For learning to fly cast, here’s a link to a three part You Tube series of free vids that does a pretty good job with the basics:
Part I: YouTube - Tight Lines-Learning to Fly Cast Part 1
Part II: YouTube - Tight Lines-Learning to Fly Cast Part 2
Part III: YouTube - Tight Lines-Learning to Fly Cast Part 3

The folks on this board are also a great resource for you so ask away. They’ll be able to answer your questions and/or point you towards other resources that are out there.

    So make yourself at home.
