Default Waterhouse Lake in Tuolumne County, California

Has anyone had any success fishing Waterhouse Lake? I will be hiking/camping the area during the second week of August. What should I expect? Are there any other fishing areas in the general vicinity?

Default Re: Waterhouse Lake in Tuolumne County, California

I day hiked in and fished Waterhouse Lake a few years ago in mid October It was the deer hunting season opening weekend, I remember it well because I nearly froze. It had snowed about an inch the night before and the temperature never got above 20 degrees all morning; my line kept freezing in the guides. I managed one hookup on a green #10 Woolly Bugger, but he broke off, taking the fly with him.

The lake is relatively small and sits in a granite bowl. It believe it used to be intermittently stocked by the DFG a few years back, but I don't think that is the case anymore. I have friends that have fished it over the years and still make the trek from time to time, more for the hike than for the fishing. The hike in takes about an hour; the last third of the trail isn't marked real well (it's over granite) so you'll need to keep track of landmarks once you drop into the canyon so you can find your way back up. There are some nice spots to pitch a tent once you get there.

There are also a number of excellent camping/fishing opportunities available in the area, both streams and lakes. Pinecrest Lake is probably the most notable. The Stanislaus River and the surrounding drainage has both stocked and wild trout. With a little internet homework you should be able to dig up sufficient information.

Feel free to send me a PM.

Time flies like an arrow, trout flies like a river.
