Just Curious: How Many Fly Rods Do you Own

Hey there,

I am approaching the danger zone with my propensity for collecting fine objects.

I now have 3 fly rods, one 8wt., a 5wt., and a 4wt. I can see myself continuing the search for that perfect rod at a decent price, or actually just enjoying the fine craftsmanship that comes with a nicely built rod.

My finances will only permit so fine a rod , vintage older rods perhaps, but I still have a few years of collecting left in me.

Next on my wish list is a 2 wt. TFO

So are there any rod hoarders out there? How many is too many if there is such a thing. I know there are those who will only have one or two rods that they use and wish to limit their possessions to only what truly
matters. I do understand but I have always loved collecting certain nice things.

Phil: I currently have 12 rods, I gave two older Orvis TLS rods away in August to a couple of teenagers that went on a horse pack trip into the Winds with me. They had never fly fished before, but after a short casting demo they hit the nearby lakes and had a blast catching small cutthroats.

3wt Allen Xa 7'6 - small cricks
5wt Albright A5-NS 9' - all rounder
8wt Daiwa Exceler 10'6 - salmon and steel

Have preordered a Kabuto 8' 5wt fiberglass blank i'm gonna build this winter.

Also just sold a brand new TFO TiCrX 7'6 6wt - was gonna be a nymph stick but i decided it was too short, so i'm not looking at a TiCrX 9' 6wt blank that i might build for that purpose.

I have around 25.
I've tried to cut that number back, but it's like trying to loose weight.
For each 2 that I sell or give away, I acquire 3 more.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without physically counting, I came up with 24
4 bamboo
10 fiberglass
10 graphite
plus there's probably one or two that I'm forgetting

I knew I wasn't the only one who can't get enough fly rods. :D:rolleyes:

I love hearing stories of those who give their rods away to new fly fishermen. Very cool, :cool:generous and kind of you.

Are fly rods to fly fishermen, like shoes to women? I guess some women can hoard fly rods too.:D

I refuse to answer under the grounds that I may incriminate myself. Yeah. it's that bad...
Come on now, :D you are in a safe environment. We won't judge you, maybe envy you a bit.;) Under 50? :)

Definately under 50, I'm probably right around the 20-25 range but I know I won't stop :D The real problem is I have a dozen rods that get steady use and a closet full of "why did I buy this?"

I think we did this one a while back, but I think the list has grown.

3wt TFO 7'6"
5wt Cabelas trad II 9' (broken tip, now 8'9")
5/6wt albright 9'
5wt 'Superfly' JUNK
6wt Cabelas RLS (broken middle, replaced with other section)
6wt TFO pro 9' 2pc
7wt reddington redfly 9'6"
9/10wt generic 'Wind River' brand, actually casts alright although heavy
10wt Albright clearance special, casts nice but no need. 2pc.
11wt Ross Essence FC 9'

AND, now looking and deciding on a Scott A4 590-4. And I suppose an 8wt should make it on the list in the next year or two (maybe one of the newer bass rods?)
Hopefully I will sell a few of the extras in the 5-6 range and the 2pc 10wt Albright. I want doubles in the 5-6 range for taking out friends and family.

14 (and counting) for me...and no, I don't feel one bit bad owning this many!

Orvis Superfine Touch 6' 1wt
Orvis Superfine Trout Bum 6' 2wt
Hardy Aln 5' 2wt
Orvis Helios 8'4" 3wt
Sage TXL 7'6" 3wt
RL Winston Boron IIIx 9' 4wt (5pc)
Orvis Trident TXL 7' 4wt
Sage Z Axis 9' 5wt
Orvis Far & Fine 7'8" 5wt

Orvis Hydros 10' 7wt
Sage Flight 9' 8wt

I actually use all of them too...some more than others.

I guess the good thing is that I can use my reels on more than 1 rod, right?!

I've built rods as gifts, but I've never given one of mine away. They become like family to me. Some more impressive than others and some I have no use for, but they're still family:D I'll have to try and give one away...

As of right now I have 2 4wt (one's a loaner), 1 5wt, 2 7wt, and a 10wt. I will have two more 4wts, a 6 and another 5wt. I cycle through rods, I buy something that grabs my attention and sell it when another does, that however is fading as I've narrowed it down to the most used, best casting, and last but not least eye pleasing.

I started accumulating rods but have been selling most of them off the past few years because I could not see any reason to have them lying around not used when I could sell them to someone who would use them. Plus, I use the $$ to upgrade, and I avoid the complaints "don't you already have enough rods!". My current selection:

4wt: Winston WT; Burkheimer 489

5wt: Burkheimer 595; Sage Z-axis 590 that I built (also have my very first rod, an orvis 5 wt that hangs near my tying bench, and another 5 wt I built for my spouse). I bought the Burkie 489 and loved it so much that I sold a 5wt ZXL and a 6wt XP this spring to get the 595.

8wt: Winston BIIX that I will probably sell to get a new 7wt.

Spey: Meiser Highlander S 13' 7wt; Burkheimer 8142

All of these rods are fished heavily and have their own place, except for the 8wt which is not used so much anymore because I prefer spey to single hand for steelhead.
