Susquehanna Smallmouth
A couple more weeks of this Arctic Vortex insane weather, and the smallmouth will start again in the river.

Of all fly fishing, this is the most fun for me! Way better than trout, bluegills, or carp!

So much fun wading with a 8 wt, floating line, and olive or black woolybuggers. The Clouser head size 6 works the best for me.

Next month the big bass will be in the shorelines. I'm all set to go!

Tight Lines,

Re: Susquehanna Smallmouth
Nice photos and jumps! I agree that Smallmouths are one of the top fish to put at the end of a fly rod!! They're just like little dynamos! They just don't give up!

My favorite way of catching them is on poppers, but when that doesn't work I use clouser's as well... In a white and brown pattern.

That's what caught this beauty here, my best bass of 2013.

Season opens around june 20th.... Bass breed pretty late around here and we can't fish for them before and during the breeding season.

How the heck do you have no ICE in the flat stretch of river. The Connecticut River where I fish for Smalles is locked solid! I can't wait myself. :fishing:

Those pix were from March of last year. Now the Susquehanna is all jammed up with ice, it's this crazy weather?

I'm just getting ready. The smallmouth are the first ones to bite when the ice goes away ...... even before the crappie?

Love watching those smallies jump! My favorite fresh water fish, no doubt.

Here is a pal of mine releasing a monster. His biggest smallie caught on the last fishing trip of his life. Big C came back an took him a few months later. RIP Tom.

Re: Susquehanna Smallmouth
Definitely getting ready to get after some smallies. I haven't fished for them too much with a fly rod, but gearing up to hit it hard this year. We have a few rivers/creeks where I have smacked the smallies with spinning tackle, but want to try my hand with a fly rod. Does anyone have any experience fishing next to an overflow dam? We usually cast right into the turning water with tubes or fat alberts, but think it could be harder to fish up there with a fly would I present the bug? Similar to a steelhead streamer presentation (cast perpendicular to current and work it down stream using a streamer/bugger)?
