Thread: Secret -- don't read this

  1. Default Secret -- don't read this

    Pagosa Springs, Colorado

Within 60 miles you can fly fish the Animas, Florida, Los Pinos, Piedra, San Juan, and Rio Grande rivers, not to mention hundreds of stream tributaries. Then there's also Vallecito, Williams, and Navajo reservoirs, not to mention numerous mountain lakes.

You can actually sit in a hot springs on the river downtown and cast for trout---and catch a few. But don't wear your waders to do this in July.

This is a very secret place in the West, so don't mention it to anyone. In fact, don't even comment on my post. We don't want to draw any attention to this place.

Where the heck is Pagosa Springs? You can't get there from here (wherever here is).

Spent a few days on the Piedra a couple of years ago. Backpacked in about 3 miles, set up a tent, and fished for three days. It was a beautiful place with almost zero fishing pressure, in fact, I don't know if I saw more than 2 or 3 others fishing the entire time. However, the fishing was only so-so due to recent rains muddying up the creek pretty bad...or it could be that I'm just a novice.

Sinc: I have to agree, Pagosa Springs is a great destination. I've stayed there a few times on the way back from fishing the San Juan. After a full day of fishing, it is about the right distance to stop and get a place for the night and have dinner.

We used to go to Pagosa Springs a few times every year when I was growing up (70s). My mom's uncle and his family lived there. His wife cooked at a local diner, and she cooked John Wayne breakfast every morning while they were filming The Cowboys.

Beautiful country, and lots of water to fish around there. I haven't been in years. Must fix that.

Fished the Piedra with a guide in October of last year and it's beautiful, but definitely tough and technical fishing. The guide who's been there many times had trouble getting them to bite and they are smart. I hooked into two huge fish that ran me down the river to only break me off once under some boulders and the other into a log jam. With that said, I'd hike down there again in a heartbeat, especially with the leaves changing in the fall!
