    Default Bighorn Question

My wife and I are thinking about a short trip to the Horn in middle October. I know the flows have been drastically low this year. Is the river fishing well at all? I just don't want to make a trip if the river is unfishable or fishing really poorly. I go there a couple times a year, but this would be my wife's first trip and I want it to be worthwhile. I have already checked all the websites, but any firsthand knowledge would be much appreciated.

On it 3 days last week - fishing was outstanding. Floated and wade-fished from "3 to B" each day. Tricos in a.m. and caddis (mainly pupa) rest of day. Of the past three years I've fished it, this was by far the best I've experienced both in numbers and quality of fish. October will be different in terms of hatches and weather, but the flows shouldn't be a deterrent to you making the trip. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks JMO. I really appreciate the information. That's what I was hoping to hear. I really want my wife to have as good of an experience as I have had each time I have fished it. We will probably drift one day and then wade the next. I have fished it from 12,000 cfs down to 2000, and it just seems to produce no matter what.

    Cheers,

    Gary

Here is a little guide I found for the bighorn. Bighorn River Insects and Hatch Chart

Here is a fishing report as well from that same sight.Incredible September Flyfishing on the Bighorn River! - Bighorn River Flyfishing Tips

With the cold coming quick now, down to freezing next week, should hopefully get the cold weather bugs moving. IE: BWOs. Streamer fishing should be killer than as well for big browns. That would be a blast.

I would love to see some pictures from over there. Never have fished that far east in the state. In the mean time ill be praying to the weather gods for colder weather. I'm sick of summer, bring on the winter.
