While most the "mountain" whitefish I catch are here in MT, I do hail from another RM state and came across this good read in the local paper. Whitefish while ez to take a fly (specially any beadhead that shines) they are a good sign of a healthy river, good eats, and will take a dry fly/streamer/ or nymph. Not only that but at this time of year can be a good cure for the cold weather blues for some of us.

Enjoy, and remember dont hate whitey.

We love these guys out here in Idaho also. We even have a local stream where they are protected.

Sometimes a good whitefish bite will save the day. Here are my two sons with some whoppers from Idaho's South Fork Snake River:

And sometimes you wonder how they get it in their mouth!

Long live the Rocky Mountain Whitefish!

Have to say I've heard a few guides say that as well. If someone is going to pay a few hundred bucks on a day float and not quite catch on, well then....

I've always been interested in smoking them, which I've heard is delicious. Growing up with a "bad taste" in our mouths every time we caught one (not to mention piscatorial social ridicule by fishing partners) its been hard to get on the Whitey Train.

I wonder if smoked Whitefish would change my mind....
