Default Re: In search of big browns on the San Juan NM

For deeper waters on the san juan, I fish a sinking line, and get bigger fish on the bottom.

I usually have my best luck on browns from the T-hole down...But like guys have said, there are just so many rainbows in the water its sometimes hard to to get one. Good luck the Juan has been fishing great.

Thanks fishnbum, excited to head up in a few weeks. Will definitely start from bridge and work my way upstream to the T-hole. I've been reading that Chama River below Abiquiu has been fishing well over the years and is a prime place to hook into some big browns...maybe a stop over there is in order as well

Also if ya have a chance and want to fish the Chama River you may also want to try below El Vado lake. There is a place called Coopers that has cabins and a little shop next to the river, he charges to park but its not expensive..From there you can walk down river and get into fish. We were using egg patterns and some phesant tails on them last year and did really well. Make sure and watch the flows as it can sometimes be tough to wade when the water is high. I have a few pictures in my album on here of some browns that we caught there last year...

Awesome! Thanks for the advice on Coopers...I have a friend who loves fishing a mile or so down stream from their. Reports haven't been favoring it all that well recently so I wasn't sure about that area. I'll be sure to head up there soon and work my way below Abiquiu

There are some very big rainbows, too...check out this post last year from a (very good) guide.

I also have heard good things about the waters below El Vado.

FWIW...
