Default Salida, Buena Vista CO Area?

We'll be in this area end of Sept. Will be pulling an 18' travel trailer. Any particularly good places to stay? We'll be fishing some, but also doing the typical tourist thing - raft trip, horse ride, hike. We'd also like to do a day trip to Great Sand Dunes NP if its not too much hassle. What's the drive like?

    Thanks so much!

    Mark

Can't help with places to stay. As for Great Sand Dunes, Salida's about 90 miles away and Buena Vista's about 20 more miles away. Figure 1.5-2 hours depending, one way. GSDNP is worth the visit, it's pretty stunning.

    Have fun!

The drive between GSDNP and Salida is an easy drive; much of it is flat and straight (you're not going to believe how long, how flat, and how straight). There is only one pass, and it is neither high, nor tricky. It might be the easiest pass in Colorado. In fact, I got a ticket doing 19 over (69 in a 50, for the record) going uphill from Poncha Springs in a fully laden Suburban with a full tank of gas and 5 people and all their bags in it!! Just watch the use of your brakes on the north side of the pass, heading down to Poncha Springs. It's not steep at all, but if you drag your brakes with your trailer, you will heat them up. If you're just going for the day in your tow vehicle only, it's a piece of cake.

I might be wrong, but I thought all the raft companies were shut down after Labor Day. A friend of mine owns one of the rafting outfits, and I can check on that, if you like.

Sept. is prime time in the Ark valley, IMO, welcome!

What sort of camping do you prefer? RV resorts with full hookups, boondocking, SF/NF? All sorts of places close by. My TT has a 16' box, fits anywhere.

Check out the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) for campsites if you don't mind boondocking. (Depending on your definition of that). They have vault toilets but no water or hookups, but the sites are clean and well maintained. And they are all on or very close to the river!

Or, if you want established campgrounds there are several, especially just north of Buena Vista.
Life is like a box of chocolates...and a river runs through it. Or something like that.

Go on Recreation.gov or Reserveamerica.Com and look. the AHRA is a lot of different areas. The best one near Salida is called Hecla Junction. Its dry camping though. If you are looking for a Full hook up type place, there is a town right between Salida and Buena Vista called Nathrop. There is a campground called Chalk Creek Campground. Chalk Creek Campground: Buena Vista, Salida, Nathrop Colorado Camping and RV park

Place is right in between and a good base camp.

BTW - I personally don't think making the drive to Great Sand Dunes would be worth it. Its about 1.5 away from the area. Unless you just really like Sand......
