Thread: Kokanee Salmon on the Gunnison/East river

  1. Default Kokanee Salmon on the Gunnison/East river

Anyone here had any luck catching Kokanee Salmon on the Gunnison/East river in Colorado on there way up the Roaring Judy Hatchery? I'll be fishing in the area week after next and would like to hook into a few while there, if possible. Any tips tricks...?

    Thanks,
    Matt

my eight year old son and I had a great day last weekend on the East near the Roaring Judy hatchery.

The fish were thick in that reach and I was surprised at how readily they eat flies. SJ worms, hot wire princes, and egg sucking leaches were working well for us. Super fun. I want to try and get over there again soon.

Thanks for the reply. That's good to see. I wasn't sure if they would take a fly or not. Mind me asking what colors you used?

    Thanks,
    Matt

I am far from an expert. Last weekend was the first time I have fished for Kokanee. That said we fished Purple egg sucking leach, red worm and a red hot wire prince. Put on plenty of weight, you have to smack them right in the head. They are super athletic and really fun to have on. We fished our 5wt rods but I might take a six if I go back.

I have a 5wt TFO. Are you telling me I need to go buy a new 6wt rod? Man I really hate to do that, but if I must. Thanks for the info, I'll go make some more red SJ worms.

    Thanks,
    Matt

If it helps you with your wife or girlfriend...then yes. But naw you can land those pigs on a 5 just fine. Have fun.

Man - those are big Kokanees! The Montana variety are in the 12-16" range but unfortunately do not reside in the streams anymore. The invasive Lakers have all but wiped them out in Flathead Lake, lots of guys pull them through the ice at Georgetown Lake but I've never done it. If there was a river population nearby I'd be all over that. Great catch! Congrats.

This may be a stupid question, but why aren't they red?

The fish are landlocked sockeye and will get red as they ripen. For landlocked those are nice fish!

As for the use of a five weight, it can be done and you can kill deer with a .22 rifle but I would recommend a #7 for fish like that. If they are stacked in the river why not get them in quick and catch a bunch? Light lines and light rods are hard on the fish and take up way too much time. If you are harvesting the fish how do they taste?

With the money I've already spent preparing for the trip and the money about to be spent on the trip itself, I dont see a 7wt in my future anytime real soon. Who knows, may find an end of seaon sale in one of the fly shops while there. I believe these Kokanee Salmon are catch and release only. Hopefully I'll catch one a little more ripened.
