Hi all,
Long time lurker, first time poster. Three friends and I will be heading to Yellowstone from Toronto on September 10th to 15th for a fishing/hiking trip and I was hoping for some help. I’ve been scouring the internet for fishing spots and techniques and the overarching theme is always “fish for the dumb fish” – meaning, the farther from the trail head/parking/crowds, the better. However, most resources don’t actually say where to go after presenting this information. Should I just stick with the popular waters (Lamar, Slough, Soda Butte, Madison, Gibbon etc) but try to walk further than the crowds or are there specific waters that anyone knows about that require a long walk? We would be willing to walk an hour or two if it meant getting to some awesome fishing – does anyone know of such a spot? Bonus points for incredible scenery along the hike but from what I can tell, most of the park looks incredible. There is so much water in the park that I almost just want to find a blue line on a map and walk to it but I’ve read there are plenty of fishless waters in the park so I’m not sure. Feel free to PM me if you'd prefer.
Also, if anyone has specific tips about fishing this time of year that would be great. I’ve read that the Firehole might start to be fishable again that time of year and that terrestrials are popular as well as some other tips. We will be staying 3 nights in the Madison Campground then 2 nights at Slough Creek Campground, so we plan on fishing the Northwest side for 2 days and the Northeast side for 2 days. We will be stopping in at Blue Ribbon Fly Shop on the way into the park to get some tips before we get in.
Thanks for any tips!
Kevin
