If you are flying into Bozeman and heading south towards Big Sky/ West Yellowstone, be aware that there is a guardrail replacement project going on that is resulting in delays. They've shortened their work days and made some other adjustments so the delays are now down to multiple 2-10 minute waits. The first day the trip to Big Sky went from a normal hour drive to three hours. Better now, but plan accordingly. Work is expected to last till mid-November.

You might considering going south via the Madison Valley (very scenic) and across to West Yellowstone along the north shore of Hebgen or over Targhee Pass. Of course there are worse places to be stopped in traffic delays than along the Gallatin River!

It comes as no surprise to me that the guardrails on that road need replacing. Despite dozens of white crosses, indicating traffic deaths in the canyon, many, many people drive like complete idiots there. If you drive the speed limit, which is a prudent thing to do considering the road, you are guaranteed to have a pickup or truck about 10’ from your bumper. The DOT has an electronic sign just before you enter canyon. But rather than reminding people to slow down & drive safe. The sign tells the slow traffic, which equates to those driving the speed limit, to get out of the way (use pull outs)!
