    It seems (if Google is accurate) that the quote originated with Teddy Roosevelt. It made it's way further into popular culture via Charles Colson of the Nixon white house, who had a plaque with the saying inscribed on his desk. I knew about the phrase but always attributed it to Nixon as it seemed fitting.

    As an aside, I met and worked with Colson's daughter back in the 90's when she was still in the advertising world. She was a high school kid at the time of Watergate and has very clear memories of the whole thing and had a pretty unusual adolescence as a result of the 'celebrity' associated with the scandal.
