During a trip to Belize (Turneffe Flats) last November, there were large mats of Sargassum floating around and washed up on the beaches. Rather unsightly, but as far as I could tell the fishing was not affected. To me, the really depressing thing was the enormous amount of plastic garbage washed up on the beaches.
