That I did not catch a Permit once again...Just got back from KW...three great late February days last Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Weather perfect, wind 8-15, good sun until clouds around 3pm. First day a first; first cast bottom of the tide in hole to floaters, fish on, five minutes later fish off, still same cast another fish on then off, then stripping in to recast another fish on then off...soft hook it opened...got to tell Peter of S&S flies not to use soft hooks on his Permit crabs. That was my Permit moment for the day...the rest were Permit from all points on the compass, simultaneously, and I was a 78 year old ballet dancer stumbling in the casting cage in an effort to make one good cast, I didn't...but managed one Bonefish to take the skunk off the boat 4lbs. Day two better casting but did not "fish the fly" for takes...had three good follows. Then best shot...ray back cast 50 feet at nine(I'm lefty) I did it my best back cast but not only did I cast the line leader and fly but also the tip section and big fish gone...but another Bonefish by catch this was my biggest Key West Bonefish taped 24 BTT chart 7.8lbs...and then some decent big Tarpon shots that would not stay on during first jump. Day three not the quantity of the first two days wind was up to 15 and more clouds..front coming. Again they were coming in at unpredictable angles and usually on darker bottoms...shots were under 60 feet and they were spooking at line movement if I did not make the perfect cast as in they immediately nosed down on the fly and I did not. But the one time...nice 15-20 lb incoming lighter bottom with two much smaller trailers...perfect cast, piggy moved slowly but too slow and the small darted and inhaled the merkin...it's a Permit alas not so...that tell-tale head shake and I was Jacked...that's was it rain and front approached...Rum was good and my guide fixed some warm water lobster salad to go with the steak cuban sandwiches...it was good.
Now I get ready for the last week of March for Steel on the Pere Marquette. ...maybe an extra day and I'll miss a mortgage payment...
