Re: Rods You Just Can't Part With

New now but destined for future "classic" status I am confident. I favor this brace too but feel compelled to add, marketing hyperbole aside, ACCURACY stems from the angler not the rod. OK, ok,...

"Zing"

Most fly rods, given the opportunity to try several different lines on them, vary, sometimes considerably, in performance and feel. The more performance ones chosen habitat and technique is being...

Re: Reel choices.

A small language peeve, such reels feature a "spring and pawl" mechanism that results in a check with a "click" sound. And it is true that without an adjustable "drag" simply an over-run "check" the...

Re: Question about fly line maintenance

My lines get dirty because I fish spring creeks and tailwater fisheries rich in organic materials. The surfaces of rivers like the Henry's Fork and Missouri contain tons of insect and plant organic...

Re: Blood knots vs double surgeon's knots

He may have used a surgeons knot as it sounds like he was attaching 16# to heavier butt section material. The surgeons knot is more appropriate for materials of more drastically differing diameters...

Re: What Did You Buy Today?

I have seen and cast to permit in the Keys, some huge, and never hooked one. Had to go all the way to Belize to actually catch permit where one gets many more shots.

Re: Question about fly line maintenance

Only a little very mild dish soap with warm water for all lines. The dressings do little, it is dirt removal that is key.

Re: Fly line prices = extortion?

Or strangled it with coils of fly line. It's too bad it is so difficult to field test different models of lines as for some rod/angler combinations, different lines make a truly substantive...

Re: New BVK Outfit

I was not knocking TFO.BVK. I have a #6 and my wife fishes the #8 with the TFO LA reel for bonefish and has not broken it yet. Our's are the 1st. gen. versions featuring Recoil guides and are light...

Re: Streamer Rod

I too believe a #7 is the way to throw Sex Dungeons and the like (not that I do this that much) and the dedicated rod for this, Bank Robber is a heavier line weight rod than the size written on it....

Re: New Gen Abel v New Gen Hatch

I should add, lest I be perceived as a reel snob, that the brace of identical #9's my wife and I will fish on this trip are ECHO3S's mounted with Allen Krakens. I removed the cold water Bass-Albie...

Re: New Gen Abel v New Gen Hatch

Hum, an interesting thread without a distinct answer. I have fished both brands for a very long time. What camelbrass wrote is true, for pure power and on location reliability, the cork drag Abel's...

Re: Sage Rods

I have an old DS2 in original tube in the unusual 8'/#6 size (it would likely fish well with a 1/2 heavy modern #5 line). Some one PM me with a good offer for it and it is yours.

Re: Rods You Just Can't Part With

I had the opportunity this past summer to familiarize myself with this specific model. It is heads and shoulders above and beyond my way too sloppy BIIx of this size. One of the nicest Winston's I've...

Re: Get a Grip

The reason the thumb on top is so often recommended is it aligns the top muscle of your forearm with the casting strokes direction. As, unless you are a carpenter, this muscle is not dominantly used...

Re: Cleaning and lubricating Abel cork drags

Any dirt on the inside of the Abel should be wiped away with a cloth, Q-Tips for tight areas. The springs get a tiny droplet of light machine oil and the dogs a thin coat of marine grease. Abel...

Re: Fly line prices = extortion?

I have perspective. For the first 8 years or so of my fly fishing life I had one rod outfit, an 8' for HDH line with a Medalist 1492 and an Aircell DT. I fished that line till it literally fell...

Re: Fly line prices = extortion?

My #8 RIO Flats Pro arrived for my upcoming trip yesterday. As I have written previously, I like the welded loops that come on many fly lines today but don't trust that their strength is equal to the...
