Re: Saltwater Fish Photos....Post Here!

This is sort of a moving snapshot of two old farts who love water, fish and fly fishing, and are completely comfortable laughing both at and with each other - and we have plenty of opportunities to...

Re: 12wt reel for Christmas Island

I would like to echo Camelbrass and Dynaflow's thanks for your kind post, S&S - however overstated it was in my case. I know I learn an incredible amount more from the many truly knowledgeable...

Re: Fish eating behavior

That, along with the tide in the salt, is the only part of the code that seems to hold true for a lot of species.

Here are some reel weights spooled with hollow spectra backing and 12 wt lines rounded to the nearest 1/100th oz

New CCF X2: 12wt 12.44 oz.

Re: Abel 3N Small Arbor for Bones & Reds?

Everything is an opinion. :D :D

I think the TCX was probably Sage's biggest quality jump in salt rods since the RPLX in 11, 12 and 13 wts. I've got the TCX in 7, 8 and 9wts.

I like all of...

Re: Fanning Island

Thanks for the picturers, HiTide. Beautiful!

That grey fly line in the last bonefish picture is the same color as a SA "Bonefish" line from the late 80's which was a great line. Don't know why...

Re: Long Leaders

None of my heavy weight rods came with them. None of my lighter weight rods (except bamboo ones) have them either - anymore. :D

Pliers make short work of them.

Re: Tippet failure.

Yes. I have had that happen to me and a friend during the same season with one brand coming from 3 different spools - actually four come to think of it. It was 60 # test from two 35 yd spools and...

Re: Do some reels just not fit in some reel seats?

I know nothing about building rods, but the tolerances on the reel foot radius spec is ridiculously loose. There is well over a sixteenth inch difference on diameter between the minor and major...

Re: Am I breaking my wrist on my back cast? (PIC HEAVY)

I agree with Silver that it is probably drift from the trajectories of both the fly leg and the rod leg in that picture, the distance between them and the fact that they appear to be pretty parallel....

Re: What is "load?"

Well since I didn't read it until after you finished saying it, I can tell you it was 100% relevant. :D

The rod below was built in the 60's along with several other of my bamboo rods. It is a...

Re: Casting until exhaustion

Casting until exhaustion: Anyone else have this madness?

Not anymore, but it's not because I have gotten any smarter. I'm just as stupid as always.

What's happened is that my fishing...

Re: Analyze my cast....

OK, I will. Look at your last video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jngPs19qPsc

The best results you had were on the third and 5th forward casts. The reason is that you stopped the rod prior...

Re: Rod help!!!!

Yeah. 4 of my tarpon rods are 2 piece with foregrips. One is a 4 piece that snapped at the butt ferrule on a big mamma the other 4 piece I got for my daughter and keep for her. A friend snapped off...

Re: What is "load?"

I agree with the practicality of your thinking, if not the actual physics and agree that the continuous talk about "loading the rod" is counter-productive.

Here is a still of what I would...

Re: Back to the center axis future....

Now those are the kind of pics I like, Trout, for big fish in the salt. Get that weight up higher, and the reel knob further away from the belly at the same time.:D

Freshwater setups just don't...

Re: Fly line confusion

Good solid advice, Graeme. Fly casting is probably 95% skill and 5% line/rod combination.

Below video of Lasse Karlsson casting a 3 wt line on an Echo 6 1/2' 3wt rod then casting a 12wt Outbound...

Re: Advices for GTs on flies

How did you make out Andz?

I've not fished for GT's but I am prejudiced against big eyes on flies that are attached so as to extend into the hook gap (or gape) and against popper bodies that are...

Re: Key West with a kayak

It's a bit late now, but for the future, tarpon fishing in the lower keys for the migratory fish usually kicks off later than it does around Islamorada and Key Largo for some reason.

During June,...

I don't fish that much myself anymore, and get more excited about my friends catching fish than about me catching them.

About the only time I fish myself is with one buddy who's a retired guide...

Re: Collapsing loop

.

Agreed. And I would give ridliculous odds that the backcast just prior to the collapsed forward cast did not have enough energy to unroll completely in the air behind him.

Here is a quote...
