Re: Sudan .. go? no go?

Having had to evacuate from an unstable country in Africa myself, once, I can relate. In hindsight it makes kind of a cool story, but at the time it seemed serious.

    Following City Rat's lead,...

Re: What have you been tying today?

I was taught--a few decades ago--to tie my nymphs with shorter tails, but I like the way you've tied that. I've started tying mine with body length tails now, too, especially if I'm trying to go for...

Re: Weekend dinner date or fishing trip???????

I had Anthony's in Golden last Fall. I thought it was pretty good. I'd go back.....especially if fishing was going to happen before or after!

It was supposed to be a Border Terrier. He's actually a Hobskunky. (1/2 hobgoblin, 1/2 skunk, 1/2 monkey)

Re: What have you been tying today?

Tried using a quill for this attempt at a Galloup's BWO Nymph on a #18 hook:

Not as clean and neat as Flytire's, but the quill did work well for me if I used...

Re: What have you been tying today?

Trying to tie a better RS-2 today. This simple fly seems to highlight my weaknesses as a fly tier, so it seems to be a good one to practice.

Re: What have you been tying today?

I've tied similar nymphs, but my quills don't lie flat and wide enough to get good coverage and segmentation, so I use the biots.

    Super little pattern.

Maybe I should give the quills a chance...

I agree with you for the most part. It seems their senses are sharper than ours for the most part. However, humans have better senses than they are often given credit for. And many a hunter has...

Re: Mental Toughness as a Requirement?

Even in the freezing cold, fighting ice, missing the football game, wondering if there will be any pie left when I get home, and hoping I still have all my toes....I'm having fun fishing.

    If you...

Re: What have you been tying today?

I tied a couple bugs today and they all came out ugly. Or uglier than usual. Clearly not my day to be sitting in front of the vise.

Re: Mental Toughness as a Requirement?

I don't know about mental toughness.

I suppose if you are committed to fishing 300 days a year, then 'yes', you'll likely need some 'mental toughness'...in addition to a supportive spouse...to...

Re: Grizzly Bear Attack near Ennis, MT

I usually carry spray or a .44. However, I will say that in the handful of bear 'encounters' I've had, neither would have been useful if the bear had been aggressive. They are remarkably quiet and...

Re: Are there affordable trout-bum towns left?

I think the boom hit in the '90's, maybe earlier. Salida used to be a cool little mountain town where the difficulty was choosing between climbing, kayaking, and fishing. Now.......it's...

I tied up a couple more of Kelly Glissmeyer's "Inside-Out Chironomids", this time with olive thread instead of the black as specified by Kelly:
