Re: Northwest Corner, Conn. -- 2020

I also just bought the 5.2 lb one to use as 4.5x sized tippet. Its been great! I was previously using Vanish 4lbs. The 8lb line was great for nymphing at Salmon river and Madison river!

Re: Northwest Corner, Conn. -- 2020

Went to the Farmington on Sunday. Went to several spots and it was not until the last pool that I hooked up. Its was a really beautiful day, very sunny. But the wind was a really killer. I had to...

    Re: Salmon River winter

Oh no! I truly must have missed that point. I was aware about the no weight below fly regulations. Yikes. I even had heavier egg patterns in my fly box.

    Thanks!

I was using a size 14 tungsten eggstacy in fl yellow on the dropper. I also had a heavy size 12 tungsten stone on point, which I wish worked as well.

    Re: Salmon River winter

Wife and I left NYC late and got to the salmon river around 1am.

The next day she dropped me off at Altmar North and made plans to meet for lunch. As I walked downstream, there were so many...

    Re: Installing Wading Boot Studs

I think most of the cost comes from the added tungsten carbide tip. I've fished this set since October to now and there doesn't seem to be much wear on those tips. If I were using the koldcutters,...

Re: Northwest Corner, Conn. -- 2020

I've always found it difficult at the Farmington river during the winter season. When I was euro-nymphing there two weekends ago (right after I heard they stocked the river), I was covering a run in...

    Re: Installing Wading Boot Studs

I recently changed from koldcutters (after using all of them up) to gripstuds. The screw threads are auger styled. And have been working amazing. I am pretty confident that they will not come off.

Going up again this Friday evening. Hoping to land at least 1 in the net this time! The flow is much slower than before.

Re: Northwest Corner, Conn. -- 2020

I went to the Housatonic River this weekend and I was struggling to find the fish at the deep holes at the first spot I started at. The flow was a lot slower compared to my past experience there. So...

Now that the snow chains arrived. Maybe I'll get some maxtraxs as well. I definitely can't wait to get back. Probably the holiday weekend in Feb.

    Here's the report.

The trip was great! I hooked up 3 times but didn't land them. =(

First fish was hooked up on size 10 emerald shiner (bent the hook after a decent fight and the fish even...

Was on the Housatonic yesterday. Went to the faster water to search for trout thinking that they would go there with the warmer temps but I didnt catch any in the riffles. I got a measurement of...

Thanks guys for all the information! I will tie up some of those caddis nymphs.

I also have a 9ft 8wt with a section of T-8 in front to swing streamers. I will definitely give swymphing a shot. I...

Hi guys, I am heading up to the Salmon river on Jan 17 and planning to fish the whole day Saturday and Sunday. It will be my first time to this river and I am super psyched! I have fished the Madison...

  20. Re: Long mono butt section sticking to nymphing rod in the rain/snow

I probably could have definitely gone to my 4.5mm and 5.5mm tungsten nymphs to get rid of the sticking issue. I was just wondering if there were any solutions during the rain with "ligher" nymphs....

Re: Northwest Corner, Conn. 2019 edition

I had intended to check out that tributary yesterday, but the fishing on the Housatanic was good! Also, I brought out the wife and had set her up in a winter hammock cocoon, so I didn't want to move....
  22. Re: Long mono butt section sticking to nymphing rod in the rain/snow

I'm not sure of what is usual. But if I dont want to use something really heavy to get down, I have to cast further upstream to get enough time for it to sink down to the right depth. So the mono...
  23. Re: Long mono butt section sticking to nymphing rod in the rain/snow

I'm glad I'm not the only one who've experienced this.

I did a bit of searching around. I found some solutions. One guy recommended wrapping tippet on the rod to break the tension. I think that...
  24. Re: Long mono butt section sticking to nymphing rod in the rain/snow

This longer butt section of 14 lb mono allows me to shoot the line out when I cast in dry conditions. And it leaves me with the competition line to handle the slack and retrieval. So it works out...

I think I'm going to go up there this weekend again! The fishing was really good! Hopefully, there wouldn't be much rain.
