    Re: Proper Fly Rod balance

It doesn't, that I've ever noticed. It does influence how comfortable my arm feels after a few hours, though. I prefer a balanced setup, especially when I'm fishing methods that require the rod to...

    Congratulations!

Being able to cast with either hand lets you make presentations you might not have been able to otherwise, whether due to wind, obstructions, current or anything else. It's a...

Re: Hook up to landing conversion rate

Or are very lightly hooked. If I'm fishing downstream, many of the fish that I bring to hand are just hooked "by the skin of their teeth" and the hook will fall out either by putting it the net or by...

Re: Hook up to landing conversion rate

In part, it depends on what you mean by "landed". I literally "land" (i.e bring to land) only those I intend to eat, and I haven't done that in a few years. If you mean successfully net, it's still...

Re: Am I the only one?

Yes, he did. 905 is 9'0" five weight.

I'd try a different line before another rod. Rio Gold isn't my favorite for fishing close in.

    Re: Superstitions

In fact, if you don't, you risk the rod coming apart in the brush and losing a section. And that's not superstition.

    Re: Superstitions

That's my biggest superstition, and one that has always proven true. I go out of my way to avoid catching on the first cast.

Re: 6wt Fly Rod Review - Montana Angler

I couldn't agree more. The TYA shootouts tell me nothing except the prejudices of the person who created the scoring criteria.

If I were in the market for a high end 6 weight, this review would...
  10. Re: So what's your favorite junk fly, where is your line?

Assuming it's legal, a fly is only a junk fly if it doesn't catch fish. Yes, there are flies (like mop flies or egg patterns) that I won't fish, but that's because I'm not interested in them, not...

Re: This Could've Been a Poll..................

I try to do both. Each can teach you something, and I consider a successful trip one in which I learned something new.

You really need to fish the same waters regularly to see any patterns that...

Re: The clouds aren't really red.

I favor Datus Proper's ordering of what's important to match (most important to least) :

    1) presentation
    2) size
    3) form
    4) color

Of those four, 1 & 2 seem to be sufficient 90% of the time....

Re: The clouds aren't really red.

Of course there are explanations, but none of them involve matching the color of the fly to color of the natural.

Here's a few other oddities I've encountered over the years that lead me to...

Re: The clouds aren't really red.

Saying that matching color to the color of the natural doesn't matter is not the same thing as saying color doesn't matter. Why do you think "hot spots" are so effective? Why do think Lefty said...

Re: The clouds aren't really red.

Talk about your straw man: your logic box doesn't include boxes for making the color more visible to the fish, ignoring the color of the natural (and it should say "catch more fish".)

    I'm with...

Re: The clouds aren't really red.

I find this is typical. Color may matter, but more in making the fly more visible or in standing out from the others in a big hatch, than from matching the color of the natural insect. There's as...

Re: Sometimes the trout don't know the rules

"5-6' deep" doesn't really qualify as low water, even if it was low for that run, and the fact that you said "run" rather than pool implies to me that there was at least a reasonable amount of flow...

Re: Fly Size Guide, or: What Size Fly Is This?

Tippets are never invisible. A fish can see even 7x. The advantages to smaller tippet are 1) getting the tippet through the hook eye, 2) better sink rate for small flies, and 3) it's easier to...

    Re: 2 piece rods?

Because a one piece piece rod doesn't fit into the average car trunk. If you can't get it to the stream, the rod is useless.

Re: which way do you go

Tell that to Oliver Edwards :)

It's only a convention. There is no "right" way as long as you're consistent.

OTOH, following the convention makes it a lot easier to watch other tyers.

Re: Classic rod found in garage

I fish a Browning SilaFlex 5 weight that I bought in the late 70's on regular basis. I also fish cane rods from the 30's. Both have aged better than I have. No reason not to fish yours.
