    I use glass beads on some of my stonefly nymphs. For me....as bigjim's experience.....breakage has usually occurred when threading them on the hook. I would say to go ahead and continue to use them.

    You could tie a spey style fly. Trim the fluffy stuff and put it in a dubbing loop and wrap as a hackle and then use the heart shape tip as a wing stacked on top.
