Re: Floatant trick

Well I use Walmart brand Isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy aisle to dissolve the grease off my stove (and remove permanent marker). Works like a charm.

Re: Issue with new Echo Base reel... bummed with customers service, too!

So what exactly happened with the reel to cause it to stop functioning? Reels are pretty simple devices. If it wasn't broken due to mistreatment or misuse then I assume it was a manufacturing defect....

Re: hickory shad

Agreed, I had a run-in with a school a few weeks ago. Wish I'd had my 6wt instead of my 9wt but they were still a blast.

Re: Tungsten Putty?

I carry some from Orvis that I've used on occasion, but I've found that it frequently falls off the line and have not been particularly satisfied with it. These days I tend to use beaded nymphs as a...

Re: Helios 3

I've cast the 5wt D and 8wt F at the Dedham, MA store but not for long enough to really put them through their paces and it was in the parking lot. I don't even know what lines they had on them. Both...

Re: How important is "nice" gear?

A lot of us would consider that entry level gear, however both the rod and the reel are quite excellent and great values. I would fish that combo in a heartbeat without any remorse whatsoever.

Re: You Tube TV?

Just remember that your cable tv providers are also your internet providers so they will make up the lost revenue from cable cutters in some way, shape or fashion. In addition to Youtube TV there are...

Re: Keeping beers cold

I love a beer and a good single malt as much as the next guy but I never mix drinking and fishing. I just enjoy fishing too much to dull the experience with alcohol. Happy to imbibe once I'm off the...

Re: Thoughts on Orvis......

:thumbsupu

I own a Hydros 904 that I love, along with an assortment of Access, H2, Recon, and Superfine, all purchased at closeout or discount. I may even purchase the nippers if I can get them at...

Re: Fly line prices = extortion?

Returning to fly line prices, while manufacturing costs may have dropped there has been an explosion in SKUs. Think about how many different tapers there are in different line weights. Now add in...

Re: Thoughts on Orvis......

So was he a jackass before he owned the $250 pliers or because he owned them?

No one will ever accuse Orvis of being a low priced producer. I do think they offer a good value in their fishing...

Re: What exactly is "Nymphing"?

I found the easiest way to get started with nymphing was to hire a guide and ask him to take me nymphing. After a smokin' half-day on the water with him I had enough of a basic foundation that I...

Re: "Sweet spots" in rod lines

Count me among those that believe the Sage One's are definitely an acquired taste. I love my Zenith 3 and 6wts for their light swing weight and easy and responsive casting, and of course they fish...

Re: "Sweet spots" in rod lines

I'm with S&S on this. It's rare that anyone has the opportunity to cast the entire lineup in a rod series, and then make a determination about which rods are the sweet spot of the lineup, especially...

Re: best 5 wt.

You already own three Orvis rods so you obviously like the Orvis feel. I too own several Orvis rods (H2, Recon, Clearwater, Access, Hydros, Superfine Carbon, Superfine Trout Bum) and like them all. I...

Re: Determining Best Weight Line if Rod Unmarked

I'm going to address your last question first. You do not want to overline a 3wt rod with a 4wt line if your goal is distance. Remember that you will be carrying more line in the air and so the...

Re: SOT vs SINK; paddle vs pedal

Having owned all three types of kayaks I think the best kayak is the one that presents the fewest obstacles for getting onto the water and fishing. My Tarpon 120 is a great fishing platform but it's...
