Sources for big eyed fly hooks?

I did a quick search and it seems very limited. I know that Orvis sells some styles. I guess I am looking for wide gap scud and dry fly hooks in the #16-18 range for starters, but would like to see...
  3. Re: Beginner...did I put together an ok setup?

The Cabela's rod probably came with about two bucks worth of fly line on it. After you have have some casting under your belt, give it a shot with your better line. You might find it makes an OK...

Re: Where to fish for Pike

Canada would indeed be the place to go for the nicest fish. Closer to your home, the "when to fish" is probably even more important if you are traveling far at all. The decent fish are going to be...

Re: question on fly line maintenance

I just use a simple cleaning kit with liquid and pads. It makes a notable difference and the line will shoot better.

Re: last night was on fire

LM Bass will break your heart but they are so much fun. Just notorious for short striking, and spitting the fly quickly. Even with heavy spinning equipment like buzzbaits and safety pin styled...

Re: 2019 Driftless Pictures and Reports

Absolutely. If the water wasn't chocolate milk I'd be all over it. I took k_e_v to a trout park a few weeks ago, just to start the day. Not because I love trout parks, but because this one is...
  8. Re: Beginner...did I put together an ok setup?

Ard gives good advice. I'll add that a downside to a forum is we are a non-stop fly gear commercial full of our own opinions. You can easily end up with multiple rods collecting dust a few months...

Re: 2019 Driftless Pictures and Reports

I believe we are hitting mid-90s next few days so the game is pretty much over down here. You could hit a pure stocker bow stream without doing any harm but they will stop stocking if the water...
  10. Re: Beginner...did I put together an ok setup?

Well when you do it that way, buy a very popular rod like you did. You'll be fine for your intended use.

Re: Etiquette for correcting bad behaviour

I surely haven't changed the world, but feel like I did what I could. I found some success leading by example, and making subtle comments about why I do what I do. I have been a proponent of...

Re: How's your summer so far?

Spring was just horrible! Longest flood season on record on the big river. Streams I can day trip blown out and muddy. Salvaged it with a trip to Minnesota to fish with the unknownflyman, and a...
  13. Re: Beginner...did I put together an ok setup?

You'll be be fine with the trout taper. You chose a good line for that rod IMO. I definitely wouldn't suggest a new caster underline. You'll only make the learning process harder on yourself IMO.
  14. Re: Beginner...did I put together an ok setup?

Welcome to the forum Jason You put together a nice combo.

Re: Found a Sage Rod on the Green River

That sounds like a reasonable explanation Ard. A good chance your typical thief would not realize the numbers are there. I have read the number should also be on a tag so the new owner can register...

    Re: Clinch or Improved Clinch

There is nothing wrong with the improved clinch IMO. The regular clinch is a touch easier to tie with cold fingers or very low light. It doesn't slip on small diameter lines. I am starting to...

    Re: Questionable behaviour

Unethical is likely a little rough given the lack of details. If they were presented as separate catches over time, that's a little cheezy, but just my opinion. She doesn't have to answer to me...
  20. Re: Good Article: Brainstorming on the "Pro Deal" Conundrum

Seems like an issue for the individual manufacturer to work out with their retailers. I wouldn't expect Taylor to operate the same as Orvis or Simms, as Taylor is the retailer and designer, not the...

    Re: Clinch or Improved Clinch

Already answered by others, but no knot appears optimal for all line types and sizes. The improved clinch/Trilene knot was illustrated on the package of fishing lines for decades and I used it. ...

You may be right, regardless of my banter with you on the opposing side, we'll soon know if this was just a drive by troll job and no interest in actually contributing to this forum.
