    Re: Trout and Algae

I don't believe the hemlocks contribute to the algae, if that were the case the GSMNP would be full of algae. We have many streams absolutely full of dead hemlocks and there is no algae present.

    Re: Trout and Algae

My understanding of algae growth is that it can result from a high nitrogen level in the stream and it also depletes the dissolved oxygen in the water as well, not what trout can tolerate. I also...

Re: 4wt Dry fly rod suggestions

I have used that exact line on my 3 weight Redington CT and it does just fine, but the line I prefer better is the AirFlo Super Dri Elite. I have also recently tried the AirFlo River and Stream on...

Re: 4wt Dry fly rod suggestions

One of the best bangs for the buck is the Redington Classic Trout. They have a few different configurations in 4 weights. Go check them out. Online pricing is better than Redington's pricing. There...
  6. Re: Tippet Ring on the end of a fly line ?.....using two tippet rings on a leader ?

In my very unscientific experience, I would say the loop would get more wear and tear simply due to a smaller area of contact with the tippet ring as opposed to a perfection loop. I could see where...

    GSMNP is closing, FYI

For those that fish or might be traveling there to fish, the GSMNP will be closed starting today at 12 noon through April 6. This includes all roads, trails, bathrooms, visitor centers, everything....

Re: Rod|Reel paring and beginner friendly setup

Reels have come some way, most notably in the larger sizes with drags. The reels for lighter weight lines say less than 5-6 weight really do nothing more than hold the line so less changes there. A...

Consider visiting a local fly shop. They should have all the info you need along with what you need.

Re: WTB a rod tube and cloth (4 pce, 9 wght)

I’ve bought a couple of rod socks off of EBay and have been very pleased. Very well made and not terribly expensive.

Have you contacted Orvis customer service? I bet they send you one.
  14. Re: line recommendation for Redington Classic Trout (5wt)

On my more moderate action rods including the Redington CT, I have found these lines do pretty well(in no particular order):

    AirFlo Super Dri Elite
    Rio LightLine
    AirFlo River and Stream...

    Re: A tough approach

We have water that clear and often times clearer down here in the Smokies. Not as big a pool as that, but we also have the added "benefit" of overhanging trees, rhododendron, laurel, etc.

    What I...
  16. Re: medium vrs. medium fast action- pros and cons and opinions please.

The vast majority of mine are moderate or as Orvis puts it, full flex. Orvis Superfine Carbons, Sage LL's, Scott G2, etc.

I grew up on fiberglass and early graphite. Moderate/medium is more my...
  17. Re: medium vrs. medium fast action- pros and cons and opinions please.

I agree totally about the smallmouth rod. At least around where I fish for them, a 5 weight would be okay, but a 6 is even better throwing larger streamers and poppers.
  18. Re: medium vrs. medium fast action- pros and cons and opinions please.

Here is something to ponder now that we know your two options.

The St. Croix Rio Santos is no longer in production so if it comes to a warranty issue/claim that may present problems. The Redington...
  19. Re: medium vrs. medium fast action- pros and cons and opinions please.

    It would help to know:
    1. The exact make and model of each rod.
    2. The intended target species.
    3. What type of set up you want to use it for, dry, dry/dropper, nymph, streamer, etc.
    4. Distances...
  20. Re: Help me pick new 5/6wt trout setup for Pa waters

What size/weight are the fish you’re after? This will possible change what I’m recommending below.

Unless there’s something I’m missing, a 6 weight seems like a lot of rod. Even a 5 weight seems...

    Re: Loop rod tip replacement

When you say “reached out” I’m assuming that was via email.? As wonderful as email is, it has its problems/issues.

In cases such as yours it is always best to call and *talk* to someone. Allow...
  22. Re: Which Small Stream Rod to Pair with Colorado LT - 0/3

Being as I fish the GSMNP and specifically for brook trout, I would recommend a 3 weight over a 2 weight. We don't normally get much wind in the park but when you do having a 3 weight gives you a bit...

Re: Coronavirus and the travelling angler

    Excellent points, all.

I would also be concerned that if on a trip if bad enough, a good hospital might not be near or even available.

And if there is a ban on incoming people from a place...
