Re: MONSTER pike flies
Awsome flies! What is the synthetic fiber you are using? I need to find some 'cause I don't have anything that long. Again, Nice ties!

Re: MONSTER pike flies
those are awesome! where do you get flash that wide? i can only find the thin stuff. also, where do you get those sparkle stick on eyes? i looked everywhere and couldnt find them! red is also the only color of long streamer material they had at gander mtn. i tied these two after getting your fly in the bass swap, it is an awesome design! they are about 6 inches long. any tips????

Re: MONSTER pike flies
stick with the doll eyes adds noise to the flys. large flash-a-bou can be found at christmas stores, check the online stores..

Re: MONSTER pike flies
The smooth body material is peglusi fiber (white), the green curvy material is Yak hair. The wide tinsel is actually xmas tree tinsel from Walmart.
The primic stick on eyes are from I actually prefer the holographic eyes, but happened to be out and wanted to finish the flies.
I do not like doll eyes. If they get punctured they fill with water and the fly is junk.

I will do a picture build this weekend and post for you guys. This fly actually has about 15 steps.

Re: MONSTER pike flies
ive actually had the eyes fill up too! the ones i just made are coated with epoxy, so i hope that will help a little.

a step by step would be awesome!

Re: MONSTER pike flies
coating with epoxy works on doll eyes, plus if you put a hole in the bottom of the fly it will drain. they rattle nicely though.

Re: MONSTER pike flies
Tie a chunk of white hair to the hook. This is the most important step. This chunk of hair must be solid to the hook or the fly will try to spin on the hook shaft. Trim off excess after each step. Do not worry about the head being flat as we will correct that with the peacock herl.

Add a bundle of sparkle. This is tied with holographic tinsel.

Add a second bunch of white calf hair.

A couple loops around all the hair at this point will pull the gaps in the hair together.

Add the white super hair.

Add the white Peglusi fiber.

Add the blue Peglusi fiber.

Tie in a chunk of blue super hair.

Add your blue calf hair.

Add some blue crystal flash.

Tie on the top calf hair.

Add the side flash. Blue tinsel and silver holographic scales.

Finish off with some peacock hurl. This completes the top of the fly and makes the head triangular. This was why we did not worry about the fur being cut flat.

Put on a rubber band to control the body and add eyes.

Add epoxy and spin.

Trim the body as long as you want. I prefer a nice taper from the end of the calf hair to the end of the tail. The super hair only needs to be a couple inches longer than the calf hair. It is only added to give the body a transition from the Peglusi fiber to the calf hair.

The finished fly.

Re: MONSTER pike flies
Awsome fly, and thanks for posting the steps. But by "calf hair" I assume you meant yak hair, or you have managed to find the best calf hair I have ever seen. If it is calf hair, where did you get it that long?
