Thread: Early Spring flies for CA

  1. Default Early Spring flies for CA

Just curious what patterns seem to work for you guys in the early spring months. My experience nymphing and with dry flies is really limited. I usually use woolly buggers because they always seem to work but I want to start nymphing more and change it up.

Every water will be different. Where are you fishing?

In my neck of the woods (Northern California), I can narrow my fly selection to the bugs that I usually encounter.

    Mayflies
    Western March Brown
    Blue Wing Olive (Baetis)
    Pale Morning Dun

    Caddis
    Grannoms
    Green Rockworms

    Stoneflies
    Skwala
    Yellow Sallie

    Midges
    Tricos

Choose a fly pattern off of the bug that you want to represent.

I live in ripon, so the closest rivers would be the merced, tuolome, and mokelumne. Also the stanislaus, lower sacramento, and american.

You are within a 20 minute drive to Bob Nakagawa's shop, Sierra Angler which is on McHenry. Pick his brain. He is a wealth of information.
