    Default Tenkara One Fly resurrected...

One of my best to date and tying all the western flies really helped improve my technique.

I used this fly for a year solid fishing nothing but Tenkara before I moved to Western gear. Landed many a fish at my side.

Very nice fly. I use one very similar to it and the brook trout here in Virginia really seem to like it.

What did you use for the hackle? What size are you mostly using?

I only fish these in size 10 now though I used to tie a few sizes. I use Hungarian Partridge though I have also used Pheasant in the past.

Thanks for the reply. I also originally started with a size 10, curved/wide gap hook like the you in your picture. But, when fishing for brook trout, I was having a lot of problems setting the hooks. So, I switched to a size 12, nymph style hook (Mustad 3906B) and I've had much better success with hook ups. Now that I've had more practice with the Tenkara rod I need to go back to my original curved hooks and see if there's any change.

I really like your hackle. It's much better than any I have...need to get some like yours.

    Great looking fly!

Regarding hackle, one thing you may want to think about is where you'll be fishing your fly. You may want to use a slightly stiffer hackle when fishing really fast water, and a softer hackle for slower waters. It's fun to play around with different combinations (size, color, hackle stiffness/density, etc) and see what works best.

The more you know, the less you need.
