Default Holston Smallmouth

We have been having a great week with clients. We have had a topwater popper bite all day. We start in the middle of the river in the morning to fish chasing minnows. We move to the shade as the sun gets high in the sky and then move back to the middle of the river as the sun starts getting lower in the sky.

Here are a few from the last float:

Nice smallies Randy. I recently saw you on Outdoors with Joey Mines on Fox South; good show. How's the water situation over your way now?

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the pictures of those nice smalllies. Oh no, is that a spinning rod I see in the one picture? Is anyone catching trout on the Watauga?

David

The tailwaters are low, but they are fishing good. The small streams are down to a trickle and some have dried up.

Frank

Yes it is a spinner rod. It is hard for a newbie to throw a 7 or 8 weight all day. I give them a chance to take a break every now and then. The Watauga is fishing well in the morning. Once the sun gets up and warms the waters into the upper 60's they hunker down on the bottom and become very spooky.
On a recent Watauga float his lady caught this 16 inch bow on a beetle and then a 19 inch brown on a Red Butt.
