I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a used SA System 11 in good shape. I want to use this on my 13' 8 weight double-handed rods. Has anyone used these reels on their double handers? Any idea of the weight of the reel? Can it hold 150 yds of 30 lb dacron backing plus running line, head, and tip?

I understand these were basically Marquis Salmon reels that Hardy made for SA, and the System 11 is somewhere between a Salmon I and II.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott,

I've never had hands on one of the reels in question, if it looks like a Marquis Salmon II then it'll hold about 250 yards and an 8 weight Spey line. It's been a while since I used the big Marquis but I have had 2 of them and they have great capacity.

I have a buddy who has several old SA System reels on his two handers, although the biggest I've seen is the system 10. Nice reels, virtually the same as my Marquis. The system 11 is the same width as the salmon 1, but a little bigger in diameter, it'll hold a lot of backing.
