The biggest pain is trying to quickly identify Wild Parsnip and Queen Anne's Lace. Granted Queen Anne's Lace is usually more full with the flowers but they're around the same size. Wild Parsnip hurts like fire ant bites while Queen Anne's Lace feels like nothing. Moral of the story...wear long sleeves and don't just grab on to whatever! And wash with Dawn dish soap as soon as possible. I usually carry a bottle in my car along with some bottles of water to wash my hands before I start loading my gear back in the car.

One thing we do need to start to be weary of is rattle snakes. I've had quite a few guys tell me they spotted some more on the Iowa side of the Mississippi near Harper's Ferry as well as near Viroqua. One Amish guy was telling me he saw 3 or 4 just sunning themselves on a few rocks near the stream on his property from about 11 AM to 4 PM.

I've heard of rattlers on the Wisconsin side, too, but more southeasterly, by Big Spring Creek. I haven't heard of any in Vernon County, but that doesn't mean they're not there...

I have the keys to a cabin in Highlandville , Ia. and I'm here to tell you there are timber rattlers there . Also lots of Private land and the owners use trail cams and do prosecute . Just a FYI .

Yeah I stayed not far from there and that is where an Amish land owner told me to be careful. Not the best thing to hear!
