    Default Cancun March 2018

Hey, just found out I am going to Cancun in March. Never wet a fly in salt water before, would love to give it a shot. I just have to get to Cancun, then everything is included so I figured I might be able to justify a guide. From what I hear, I need to up my casting game. Biggest rod I have is a 7 weight, so I will have to get some line on it after Christmas and get to the park to practice distance and accuracy.

Any recommendations on where to go? Guide recommendations?

Go look at the Yellowdog fly fishing website. There are guides out of Playa Blanca that will pick you up at your resort in Cancun. If I'm reading it correctly they even provide equipment. Your 7 weight will work fine for the fish (bonefish, baby tarpon and most permit), you may find it challenging with the wind though.

I have never fished that area specifically, but have fished other areas (in fact, just got back) on the Yucatan and have to say I love it. It's really hard to beat the price for the diversity of fishing you get and some areas are really fantastic.

Yeah, I mainly want to line up the 7 to practice distance and accuracy. If I had a bigger rod I would use that. I just hear you are you will have a much better time if you can cast a little further with few false casts.

Found this place, will poke around a bit more. Thanks for the tip!

    Shaun,

CRC01 had a good recommendation with Playa Blanca Lodge, however, from Cancun it's going to be three hours to get there, and I don't know if your intention was to do an overnight trip while you're here, although it is a bucket list destination. There are also several other top notch fishing lodges in the area.

For a quicker trip consider taking a ferry over to Cozumel from Cancun and do some flats fishing on the north end of Cozumel or even stay a little closer and fish off of Isla Blanca, just north of Cancun......take a look at this website.

Sorry, I meant Isla Blanca in my post. I believe the guides will make arrangements to pick him up at his hotel/resort.

The Lagoon up by the white islands is supposed to be fantastic fishing. It has been on my bucket list for a while and everything I have heard has been good. It is a longer drive, especially if you are staying in the hotel zone in Cancun.

Your nearest best bet is Isla Blanca. You will get shots at juvi Tarpon, Snook, Bones, and hopefully Permit. Contact cancunflyguides. Edwin is the guy I recommend. Definitely brush up on your casting game, you need to be able to punch that 7wt into the wind backhand as well as forehand.
