I recently came into position of a early 1930s 3 1/4 inch perfect . Unfortunately it doesn’t quite fit on any of my Bamboo rods as they all have been built in the last 10 years or so . I really don’t want to file down the reel so what other options do I have apart from buying a older rod or getting one built to fit the reel .
Any suggestions would be most welcome,
Cheers Geordie .

A custom made reel foot, there should be plenty of machinists, both amateur and professional on the forum that can and may be willing to do the job, or look for a local machine shop or club, they love a challenge.

I may be wrong but I believe that foot may attached by 2 small screws. If this is indeed the case with your model then contact Hardy Alnwick and specify the reel to them and request a modern foot with proper alignment holes.

I know this may require that you be persistent to get results but I think it is the way to go. Make darn sure you like right hand winding before you go farther with it though.

Two guys come to mind..... Bill Archuletta’s Reel Works or Mike’s Reel Repair. They can make you a replacement foot for your reel.

- Reel Service - Archuleta's Reel Works
- Contact Us

Other options are to get a find a custom rod maker that can install a different reel seat to one of your rods.

Filing the foot is an option... but would be a last resort. I try to keep reels as original as I can.... but everyone is different.

One thing to note.... is sometimes the screws used to mount reel feet are peened over to prevent them backing out. Not all are this way, but some are. This just means I would suggest having a trained reelsmith doing this work.

I forgot about Archuletta, good call, he just mailed me a heavy duty replacement spring for my Taupo last week. He may want the reel sent to him so be prepared for the AU to US postage fees...…………...

Whoops.... didn’t see the Australia location. Yes. He would want the reel and it would be pricey to ship.

Don't file the reel foot, I've known guys who have, and every one was sorry they did. If nothing else it usually looks crappy, but it also reduces the reel's value quite a bit.
Having a custom rod maker replace the seat is a good option, but since the seat will be longer they may need to recork the rod as well. I'm also sure you could find someone to trade a vintage reel for a modern one, if you're not too attached to the reel.

No doubt, I've been there to his machine shop in Grant Pass and he probably has some pre-made, he has a lot of parts. If he does maybe the mounting holes are consistent for certain vintage and size. Next best would be get the foot and drill your own.

You'd be surprised, not enough hours in a day to get done what I have to do, they say the earth is slowing down so days will get longer, I might finally start to catch up,if I live another 10,000 years.:D
Maybe do it like I do buddy, just what you really have to and spend the rest fishing or touring your area.

And therein lies the problem, I've spent so much time doing what I like to do over the years that everything else has gotten into a poor state.
Anyway back to the subject in hand, anyone got a diagram of the Hardy Perfect reel foot that is required, with dimensions, I could always make some if you are prepared to take care of the postage. It's not a big job.
