Hi:
I am new to this forum.

I live in Markham Canada.

I found a fly rod and reel in my basement and am wondering if someone can tell me anything about it.
It is 8 feet 10 inches long and in 3 sections.
It has a decal with the name Martin James near the but end.
My guess would be that it is wood but I am not sure.
Impressed in the brass at the end is PAT APP.

The reel appears to be brass. I cannot find any identifying marks, names, maker etc.

The rod is in a canvas bag which doesn't appear to have any identifying marks.

The line that was on the reel appears to be like braided, 2 colour fine string.

I have attached some pictures.

Any input would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

Pearlthomas

Welcome to the forum pearlthomas. Wish I could go down into my basement and find rods, because it would save me a lot of money.

I don't know anything about your rod. Except that it appears to be fiberglass that is painted to look like wood, but with the smooth blank, it sure don't look like bamboo. The reel is a mystery to me as well, but I will tell you, I love it! That reel has some character and class going for it.

I hope someone here can help you find the answers you're looking for.

Welcome to the forum, pearlthomas.
I just googled Martin James fly rods and found a post from Martin James Gt Gt Grandaughter saying he built bamboo rods in mid-nineteenth century. It may be green heart rather than bamboo, but I will leave that to others to speculate. There is one for sale on ebay, right now. Hope you find your answers.
